Global Skin Toner Market - Growth Propellers, Restraints, and Opportunities
Published On : 17 Sep 2014
Skin toner finds major applications in skin cleansing and getting rid of grease, oil, makeup and dirt collected deep inside the skin pores. Toner also helps in the refreshment and conditioning of the skin, in addition to reduction in irritation, inflammation, anti-ageing nourishment, and hydration.
A skin toner plays many different roles, and can be applied as cream, as a part of a lotion and as a cleanser. Toners are usually liquid, except for some gel or mist-like formulas. Toners are also used as a part of daily skincare routines - a step between washing and moisturizing.
A skin toner is majorly marketed as a skincare product that helps the skin in looking young, refreshed and smooth. The huge prevalence of outdated information in the market has made toners quite a puzzling category of skincare products. Many misconceptions about skin toner prevail in the market, making fashion magazines, cosmetic salespersons, and even dermatologists advise against their use. But a well-formulated skin toner is capable of providing amazing benefits to the skin. Due to this, the value of a skin toner in the global skincare market remains of importance to this day.
Skin Toner Market - A Global Outlook
The global skin toner market is dominated by the Asia-Pacific region. Market position of these regions is followed by markets of North America and Europe. Countries that are part of the BRIC group (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) are considered to record the fastest market growth in the coming years. The continuously expanding demography and widening young population in countries such as India and China also present good growth potential for the global skin toner market.
United Nations states that India and China collectively account for nearly 37% of the global population, of which 704 million of the Indian population and 497 million of the Chinese population is of people below the age of 35. Huge population of such potential consumers, combined with the fact that the economy is improving in these countries, the future of the skin toner industry is expected to be bright.
Skin Toner Market - How it Helps?
The composition of a skin toner includes water, sophora angustifolia root extract, disodium EDTA, alcohol denat, triethanolamine, symphytum officinale leaf extract, sophora angustifolia root extract, butylene glycol, Poncirus trifoliata fruit extract, hydrogenated castor oil, caprylyl glycol, sodium oleth-8 Phosphate, polysorbate 80, betaine, water, mentha piperita (peppermint) leaf extract, and fragrance.
Traditionally, a skin toner was based on a formula with alcohol. But with innovation in beauty products, skin toners that contain little or no amount of alcohol are easily available in the market. Nowadays, components such as rosewater and citric acid are used instead of alcohol to simply freshen-up the skin.
Earlier, the skin toner market marketed toners only to be used for cleansing purposes. When bar soaps and bar cleansers were used to cleanse the skin in the past, toner were recommended for restoring skin’s natural pH balance raised by these products. However, today’s water-soluble, and mostly gentle cleansers do not change skin’s pH noticeably. The fact that skin’s pH level recovers on its own makes the need for toners to adjust pH almost nil.
However, the fact still remains that skin loses some of its vital elements whilst cleansing. The necessity of these important ingredients, including antioxidants and fatty acids, ceramides, and glycerin makes the use of toners important. A skin toner tones and refines skin, and helps it look younger, smoother and fresher.
