Electrically powered steering column drive systems are the systems which require a column to support or connect the steering wheel to the system. Optimally the EPS drive is placed on the side of the steering column in the vehicle interior. An additional torque is provided by the motor and is transferred to the system. This method is used in compact vehicles which have to be built in a limited amount of space.
These systems are fuel efficient, and hence they emit less carbon dioxide. The EPS column drive systems work like a normal EPS system where they monitor the driver’s activity and assists only when its required, in this way they consume less power.

Since the motor and ECU are inside the cabin so there is no need of waterproofing and there is no influence on engine and transmission layout. This is the biggest advantage of using electrically powered column drive steering systems.
They provide a compact structure and does not require any messy connection like in hydraulic steering systems. They are fuel efficient and are light weight which can be easily installed in an automobile. They have a built in safe technology which allows them to drive the steering manually at the time of system failure.
They cannot be used for medium or large sized vehicles that require better steering performances as they provide a lot of friction caused by the steering column.
Steer by wire technology has been used in various heavy duty vehicles in which no amount of manual force is required but it’s still new to the automobiles and engineers are working on incorporating this technology in automobiles to make them fully automated and to provide a safe and hands-free driving.
