A fan clutch is a thermostatic device which operates according to the temperature level, at lower temperature the fan freewheels relieving the load on the machine. When the temperature rises the clutch gets engaged and cools the engine. Fan clutch is located in front of a water pump which is connected to the engine’s crankshaft via belt and pulley. Fan clutch is made of a viscous material which is mixed with a bi-metallic sensory system. Viscosity of the device cause the fluid to defy flow whereas sensory system is made of iron and copper layers.
Fan clutches are available in three configurations: thermal, non-thermal and electronic. Thermal clutches are more efficient because of the use of bi-metallic sensor which increases fuel economy. On the other hand, although non-thermal fan clutches are more economical they require more power and do not last as long as thermal fan clutches.

When there were no fan clutches, the engine was attached with a fixed fan, which was a waste of energy and very noisy. Another problem arises when fan clutch draws more air resulting in heating systems delivering lukewarm air rather than hot air. Solutions to these problems is to replace the fan clutch.
