Initiation Of Pollution Free Transport To Drive The Electric Bus Market

The present scenario is such that ICCT (International Clean Transportation Council) with UNEP (United Nations Environment Program) are providing technical support for identifying and eliminating obstacles, and, instead, extending valuation to design and adoption of clean buses for achieving public commitment. These initiatives are expected to boost the electric bus market in the forecast period.

North America is going steady on the count of electric bus market. This steadiness could be attributed to strict guidelines regarding emission of hazardous gases. Europe stands second herein. The Asia-Pacific is expected to grow at the fastest rate in the upcoming years. UCS (Union of Concerned Scientists) states that electric bus produces less than 50% of the pollution related to global warming as compared to natural gas or diesel bus on an average. The first quarter of 2020 witnessed Proterra and Thomas Built Buses welcoming the very first big order for “Jouley”, the electric school bus to be jointly developed. As far as India is concerned, more than 70K buses above six tons are sold every single year. China accounts for over 20% of the entire market.

The key players in the electric bus market include BYD Co., Ltd., AB Volvo, New Flyer Industries, Proterra, Inc., Daimler AG, Iveco, Scania AB, Ashok Leyland, Ltd., EBUSCO, Shenzhen Wuzhoulong Motors Co., Ltd., and Alexander Dennis Ltd. Coming to developments, AB Volvo, in Oct 2019, did come up with a new-fangled model pertaining to “Articulated Electric Powered Bus”. The Model-7900 is capable of carrying 150 passengers with power utilization reduced by 80%.

Also, BYD, in Dec 2019, was asked to dole out 259 pure electric buses all across the Europe. As such, Since then, it holds the distinction of being the biggest fleet operator in Europe. Public transport mobility has seen a steep increase since then. In Nov 2019, Toyota Motor Corporation entered into joint venture with BYD Co., Ltd. for working on further developments regarding battery electric bus parts.

The future is there to see LATAM contributing for a major chunk of revenue in the electric bus market. China has already supplied 200 electric buses to Santiago de Chile – 50% of which belong to BYD and the rest to Yutong. The same BYD has supplied 64 “zero emission buses” to Santiago (a city of Colombia). C40 and ICCT have passed an ordinance in the name of “ZEBRA” project, which states that every new bus procurement in the leading cities of LATAM has to be shifted to “Zero Emission Technologies”. ZEBRA partners have estimated that there could be 25K new buses bought in the two cities mentioned above.

A start-up named “Arrival” came up in Jun 2020. It is into manufacturing 10K light electric trucks. They are expected to be delivered to UPS by the year 2024. It had also received investment of 100 Mn Euros from Kia Motors and Hyundai Motor Group for developing light electric buses.
