Endoscopic mucosal resection is a procedure used to remove precancerous growths from the lining of the digestive tract as well as early stage cancer tumors. The process takes place mainly with the help of two technologies namely lift-and-cut technique and suck-and-cut technique. Lift-and-cut technique is an injection assisted EMR. Injection assisted EMR technique consists of submucosal injection of aqueous solution under the lesion creating a safety cushion.
The cushion lifts the lesion away from the deeper muscle layers of the bowel wall. The volume of injection depends on the size of the lesions and type of solution. Repeated injection is given for the complete removal of the lesions. Suck-and-cut technique is of two types namely cap assisted and ligation assisted. The cap assisted type is a single-use device that comes equipped with a specially designed crescent-shaped electrocautery snare that must be opened and positioned on the internal circumferential ridge at the tip of the cap. Ligation assisted EMR uses a band ligation device to resect the targeted lesions.
