Nordic Collaborates With iBASIS to Offer Seamless Global Connectivity Using its nRF9160 Module

Nordic Semiconductors is collaborating with iBASIS, the largest international cellular carriers in data, voice, as well as IoT services. The recent move is a part of the company’s strategy to make worldwide LTE-M and NB-IoT cellular connectivity seamless, instant and automatic when using company’s nRF9160 System-in-Package (SiP) module.

Nordic managed to get this partnership by offering 10MB free data in its iBASIS eSIM which is globally usable into its range of nRF9160 Development Kits. A customer just has to get his eSIM registered on the company’s website for nRF Connect for Cloud to easily connect to the iBASIS ‘Global Access for Things’ network and get access to a wide range of monitoring, configurations, as well as  connectivity services.

This partnership will give Nordic’s customers for nRF9160 cellular IoT an instant superior global connectivity, without having them to undergo the trouble of managing and negotiating numerous connections with independent regional cellular carriers worldwide. The eSIM technology will enable them to simply use iBasis as all-in-one worldwide connectivity supplier, with a single - agreement, ‘operations’ on-line console. The iBASIS eSIM is in compliance with all relevant and mandatory GSM Association standards.

Technology is changing at an ultra-fast pace, with the introduction of novel products and software every other day, tremendously influencing every industry.  NB-IoT is also witnessing constant changes, with NB-IoT Chipset market proliferating considerably. According to a recent PMR report on NB-IoT chipset market, this market is projected to record a worldwide 40.8% CAGR during 2018 – 2028. The report opines that Western Europe and North America will together account for approx. 30% market value shares by 2028-end.

NB-IoT chipsets are the mandatory hardware constituents required for enabling a Low-Power Wide-Area NetworK and NB-IoT network. Growing awareness about benefits of IoT in tandem with its growing penetration, has driven NB-IoT networks and NB-IoT chipsets’ demand globally, primarily in emerging countries, including China, India, and Mexico. NB-IoT is a key division of cellular IoT, which is paving way for IoT M2M landscape even when there is no Internet, thus is likely to witness impressive growth. As a result, many governments in different parts of the world have undertaken initiative in partnership with telecom service suppliers, like Vodafone. Such initiatives continue to boost clamor for hardware parts, including NB-IoT modules/ chipsets.

As per the PMR report, with an intention to increase sales of NB-IoT chipset and to reinforce their position in NB-IoT chipset market, NB-IoT chipsets’ vendors are focusing on collaborating with various telecom service providers, including Vodafone, Sprint, and T-Mobile.

The report further estimates that China will retain its dominance in worldwide NB-IoT chipset market, owing to the hefty investments made by the country government to have a base of 1.5 million NB-IoT network base stations by 2020.
